Delay to Re-opening Field Road and Closure of Ellison Street

Unfortunately, as we were approaching the final hurdle on Fieldside/ Field Road the existing 7 inch main, which we are in the process of replacing, burst subsequently causing damage to the newly laid pipe.

Our partners United Living were on hand to deal with the repair rather than wait for our operational repairers, and quickly isolated the pipe and rezoned supplies to minimise impact on customers and businesses.

They have repaired the old main and will repair the new main today Monday 28 October.

This will cause a delay to the re-opening of Field Road as they will need to excavate and repair the new main. Likewise Ellison Street road closure will also be delayed until we can open Field Road. It is expected this will take a few days to excavate, repair, backfill and allow the resurfacing to cure before reopening but the team will work as quickly as possible to get this completed.

Work on Silver Street

As you’ll be aware we had a second team laying the new clean water pipe on Silver Street between Bridge Street and Church Street. They have now laid 80 metres of new water pipe.

We’ll need to return to Silver Street on 28 October 2024 to lay a final section of new pipe around the junction with South Parade. This will take 4 weeks to complete and as we’re working in the carriageway 2-way lights will be in operation.

After liaison with the highways department, and to ensure the safety of the site team and road users, we’ll need to close Ellison Street and Bridge Street at the junction with Silver Street/South Parade for the duration of this work. A signed diversion route will be in operation which meets the needs of all vehicle types.

Access will still be available along Ellison Street from the junction of Middlebrook Lane and Bridge Street from Stonegate up to our working area. Pedestrian access will be maintained.

The Co-Op and garage will be open as usual with access from Ellison Street, Middlebrook Lane/Stonegate for cars and light vehicles. Larger vehicles will need to follow the diversion route. Please continue to support them.

Fieldside and Field Road

Our work on Fieldside is progressing west to east towards King Street. The section of old water main which was most susceptible to bursts has now been replaced.

From approximately 28 October 2024 we’re expecting our works to have proceeded far enough along King Street to enable the junction with Field Road to be re-opened. Two-way traffic lights will continue to be in operation on King Street around our working area.

Unfortunately, a further unmapped culvert has been found which is causing some further delay as we need to redesign our scheme and work around this.

End of scheme and final works

With the planned Christmas events, we’ll be bringing the works to a close and will leave site around 29th November 2024. This is slightly later than planned due to the burst on the old pipe we’re replacing on Sunday 27th October.

We understand that the Christmas lights and market event is very important to the community and a lot of time has already been invested in it, as well as the importance of the Christmas shopping period for local businesses.

We’ll need to reattend Monday 2 December 2024 at the junction of Horse Fair Green and Silver Street, for approximately 1 week to complete some connections to the new pipe and during this period 3-way traffic lights will be in operation.

The remaining section of pipe on King Street has a low burst history with zero failures in the last 6 years and we will not be replacing this section. The rest of the network in Thone has been replaced and will help ensure a safe and continuous water supply for the area.
