Continuous flow information

What continuous flow means for your business and what you need to do about it.

Ripples on water

A smart meter can help identify a constant flow of water. This means water is passing through your meter 24 hours a day 7 days a week and could mean you have a potential leak on your site.

The continuous flow could also be genuine usage if you operate a 24 hour business.

Genuine usage could be the following;

  • Machinery which constantly uses water e.g. coffee machine, printing machinery
  • A care site, providing 24-hour care.
  • Supply of water for livestock/ agricultural businesses.
  • Urinals within the building on an automated flushing cycle.

If you are able to, turning off all appliances which use water overnight, will help to use less water.

Please remember that if you run a 24-hour business, it’s best to check for any leaks/problems within the property, as this could cause a lot of damage if not repaired quickly. If you don’t run a 24-hour business, there should be times where no water passes though the meter.

Just so you know, any leaks that are found within your property boundary are classed as private and therefore the responsibility of you / the business owner / landlord to find and repair.

Did you know urinals are a common cause of continuous water use?

Between 7-12 litres per hour can be used per urinal with an automated flushing system and flushing can continue for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This could mean that most flushing could happen when no one is in the building. If you have any urinals, try to turn these off before leaving.
