Fin the Fish returns to Scarborough

Scarborough’s much-loved ‘Fin the Fish’ has returned to the town after an extended stay at The Deep in Hull for the winter months.

Developed in partnership with Yorkshire Water, Scarborough Borough Council and the University of Hull, Fin the Fish encourages the public to recycle their single use plastics and help to keep Yorkshire’s beaches beautiful.

In the summer of 2019, Fin the Fish became a landmark at Scarborough South Bay and led to more than 6,000 plastic bottles being recycled in just 8 weeks. It has now been reinstated to its former position in a bid to continue the fight against plastic pollution in seas around the UK.

Leah Humphries, Yorkshire Water’s Coastal Manager, said: “Fin was a great success when he was installed at Scarborough’s South Bay last year and we know local people and tourists in the town will welcome Fin back with open arms.

"We hope that once again Fin will encourage beach goers to look after their environment, by recycling plastics, and where safe collect discarded plastics from the beach. Head down to Scarborough South Bay this summer and do your bit by feeding Fin."

Cllr Michelle Donohue-Moncrieff, Scarborough Borough Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, said: “Last year Fin helped to significantly reduce the amount of waste plastics left on the beach so I am very pleased Yorkshire Water has been able to bring it back this summer.

“Fin acts as strong reminder to beach users to dispose of their waste responsibly. I look forward to seeing it help them look after the environment for their own benefit and that of others.”
