£330k investment at Wharncliffe treatment works to improve performance

A £330k project to reduce storm discharges from Wharncliffe Side sewage treatment works (STW) flowing into the river Don starts on site this week.

Contract partners, Galliford Try, are installing a new manhole, motor control centre and kiosk to house automated valves that will assist in draining and cleaning the storm overflow storage tanks. 

The project will improve the overall performance of the treatment works.  Together with its sister site Wharncliffe West CSO, these improvements will reduce the number of storm discharges flowing into the river Don, during extreme wet weather events.

Lumi Ajayi, project manager said: “This is one of a number of investment schemes taking place in Sheffield and south Yorkshire, including £2.6m at Alport Road CSO, £3m investment at Avenue Farm and £1.1m invested at Oakfield Avenue, that are part of Yorkshire Water’s £180m investment to reduce storm discharges and improve water quality across the region by April 2025.

“We are set to deliver our largest ever environmental investment between 2025 and 2030, with £8.3bn to be spent across the region.  This includes over £1bn investment to continue to reduce storm discharges into water courses over the next five years.”
