Yorkshire Water has begun a £700,000 project to replace 1.7km of clean water mains in Oakworth, Keighley.

Contract partner Sapphire Utilities Solutions are carrying out the project to replace pipes to improve reliability of drinking water supply, reduce leakage and prevent mains bursts in the area.  The work is part of Yorkshire Water’s £406m investment to replace more than 1,000km of water mains across the region over the next five years.

Shaun Chapman, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “Replacing water mains in Oakworth will help to provide a resilient and robust network and reduce the likelihood of future bursts or loss of supply to customers - helping us to give them the quality service that they expect.”

The project is one of three mains replacement schemes currently underway in the Bradford district – with 3.5km being replaced in a £1.5m project in Laisterdyke, and 1.1km being replaced in Lower Wyke.

A further five schemes will take place in the Bradford area this year alone – resulting in a total of 16.1km of new, resilient, pipework for the district.

The first phase of the project is taking place on Mackingstone Lane, before moving onto Holme House Lane. The project is expected to take 24 weeks in total.

For the safety of residents, road users, and Yorkshire Water colleagues, there will be temporary traffic lights around the working area, which will move as the project progresses.

Shaun added: “Large scale schemes like this one do come with roadworks and traffic management, but we work as quickly as we can and have liaised with the council to ensure that we’re working in the least disruptive way possible. We thank everyone for their patience and understanding while we work on this important scheme.”
